For Children

Learning Materials

We encouraged children to visit the exhibition. House of Illustration ran workshops and welcomed school visits.

Over 400 visitors attended the exhibition at House of Illustration as part of school and family workshops. House of Illustration’s unique illustrator-led education programme invited children to engage with Neurath’s work by sketching in the gallery and then creating collage artworks in response. The exhibition also included interactive presentations and worksheets for children outside of pre-booked groups to encourage interaction with the works on display.

Chris Sacre facilitated workshops for children in spoken English and British Sign Language (BSL). His ‘Earth and Life’ workshop used Neurath’s illustrations as a thematic starting point, and children created images which reflected on the natural world, the ecosystem and how new life comes into being. In his ‘My Story’ workshop the children used Marie Neurath’s illustrations as a jumping off point to consider the rhythms and routines of everyday life and some of the everyday science that we commonly use, such as in the process of making a cup of tea.

Working with teachers and children, we made PDF slideshows and worksheets. These use illustrations from Marie Neurath’s books and align with National Curriculum topics. Some of these were available at the exhibition. You can get a full set here.
